Objectives:

  • Recognize Historical Trauma's Impact on Native Americans Today: Understand the origins and current-day effects of historical trauma on Native American communities.
  • Compare Regional Cultural Groups: Identify similarities and differences among various regional Native American cultural groups.
  • Explore Psychological and Physiological Impacts of Trauma: Understand the psychological and physiological effects resulting from historical trauma within Native American communities.
  • Analyze Narratives and Identities: Gain insight into historical and contemporary narratives that shape the identity and representation of Native American populations in the United States.
  • Examine Tribal Demographics and Dynamics: Learn about the demographics and socio-cultural dynamics of Tribal communities across the United States and specifically in California.
  • Understand U.S. Government Indian Policies: Explore the historical and current implications of U.S. Government Indian policies on tribal peoples and their legal ramifications today.

 

This session includes a brief history of Indian policies with the federal and state governments focusing on the historical traumas inflicted on tribal people. The session will provide an understanding of how institutional violence affects tribal families today. Discussion will include current barriers, services, and needs for Native American Victims, including jurisdictional issues and cultural appropriate responses.
